Keeping up With Your Child's Immunizations

Initial immunizations for your child are important to protect them from preventable diseases, however, if those immunizations are not maintained the initial shots are all for naught. From the time your child is born until they are 18 years old, they'll receive many vaccinations. Keeping up with your children's immunizations may seem daunting, but your local Conroe pediatrician is here to help. Dr. Ayotunde Faweya of Northside Pediatrics Associates in Conroe, TX, can provide immunizations and will help you maintain a schedule for you and your child.

How Can I Know When My Child Needs Immunizations?

Your child will need a variety of immunizations throughout their childhood. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a schedule that recommends what immunizations your child needs and when they should receive them. Here is a list of what vaccines your child may receive organized by age:

Birth-2 years old

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rotavirus
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b
  • Pneumococcal conjugate
  • Inactivated poliovirus
  • Influenza
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • Hepatitis A

4-6 years old

  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis
  • Inactivated poliovirus
  • Influenza
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

11-18 years old

  • Tetanus, diphtheria & acellular pertussis (Tdap)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Meningococcal

Let us consider the first immunization a child receives, the HepB Vaccine preventing Hepatitis B, which is given at birth. The CDC immunization schedule recommends the child get the 2nd dose of the vaccine at 1-2 months old and the 3rd dose at 6-15 months old. Just within this 15 month period up to 9 more vaccines could be initiated, including but not limited to, the vaccines for influenza, tetanus, and measles. Already we can see how confusing this schedule can be. Dr. Faweya at Northside Pediatrics Associates is here to help with your Conroe children's immunizations. It is important to talk with your local pediatrician to keep up to date on your child's immunizations and schedule vaccinations in the appropriate time frame.
