Get Help From Your Pediatrician If Your Child Has Asthma

Over six million children in the U.S., as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have asthma. Although child asthma can vary in severity, it may interfere with your child's ability to be active, go to school regularly, and live life comfortably. Fortunately, with the right treatment plan, particularly one provided by Dr. Ayotunde Faweya of Northside Pediatrics Associates, serving Conroe, TX, and the surrounding region, your child can reduce his or her symptom days and help him or her lead the best life possible.

How We Diagnose Asthma

As of now, the medical community doesn't know the exact reason why some people have asthma, but most don't. Therefore, we'll listen to your child's breathing regularly to diagnose the condition. We'll ask you questions about any family history as well as any symptoms you've noticed, such as shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing spells. You'll also be asked about your child's medical history, such as whether they have allergies.

At our Conroe, TX, practice, your child may also receive a lung function test, which is known as spirometry. With this test, your child breathes into a device that measures his or her lung capacity. Other testing may be necessary as well, such as a chest X-ray.

How We Treat Asthma

Part of the treatment approach may consist of prescribing a rescue inhaler, which stops bronchospasms. It may also be recommended that your child use it before he or she exercises to prevent these spasms from occurring. In more serious cases, your child may be prescribed corticosteroids to take regularly to prevent flare-ups.

If allergies are triggering your child's symptoms, he or she will be prescribed an allergy medication or will undergo immunotherapy to reduce the prevalence of his or her allergy episodes.

For children with exercise-induced asthma, our practitioner will give you advice on how to keep your child active without triggering his or her condition.

These are merely some examples of treatment options for childhood asthma. Your child may be given one or more. The goal is to get your child's asthma under control, so he or she has as few asthma attacks as possible.

Since there's no cure for child asthma, our goal at Northside Pediatrics Associates, serving Conroe, TX, and the surrounding region, is to control it as much as possible. Dr. Faweya is a specialist with childhood asthma and will continuously monitor your child and adjust his or her care plan to ensure your child misses as little school as possible over asthma while getting to enjoy life.
