Signs of ADHD in Children

Does your child fidget constantly, ignore instructions or have trouble concentrating for more than a few minutes at a time? He or she may have attention-deficit/hyperactivity syndrome (ADHD). Child ADHD is one of the disorders that your Conroe, TX, pediatrician, Dr. Ayotunde Faweya of Northside Pediatrics Associates treats.

ADHD signs

Signs and symptoms of ADHD vary from child to child but may include:

  • Trouble Staying Still: Does your child's teacher complain that he or she doesn't remain in his or her seat during class or fidgets constantly? As hard as they try, children who have ADHD simply can't stay still. In fact, they may seem to have more than their share of energy.
  • Impulsive Behavior: Children who have ADHD may call out answers in class without raising their hands, cut in front of the long line of children waiting for their turn on the swings, or make risky or dangerous decisions.
  • Difficulty Following Instructions: Your child may not remember multi-step instructions, which can cause problems in school and at home.
  • Poor Organizational Skills: In addition to having trouble organizing school work and projects, children with ADHD may lose jackets, hats, backpacks and homework because they don't remember where they put those items.
  • Focusing Issues: It's not easy to concentrate for long periods of time when you have ADHD. Children may become distracted easily or stare outside the classroom window instead of paying attention to the teacher.
  • Constant Talking: Your child may not find it easy to stay quiet even for a few minutes. Again, the child isn't trying to be annoying or disruptive, but isn't able to control the behavior.
  • Social Problems: ADHD can affect your child's ability to make and keep friends. Other children may not want to be friends with a child that doesn't want to take turns, talks more than listens, or doesn't recognize non-verbal social cues.

If your son or daughter is diagnosed with child ADHD, his or her Conroe, TX, doctor can recommend helpful treatments and strategies, including behavioral therapy, counseling, family therapy, social skills therapy or medication.
